With a stellar field of riders, including previous winners and the world’s best, the home riders had their work cut out, especially as British flag bearers William Fox-Pitt and Pippa Funnell were missing. Overseas riders dominated the dressage, with Australia’s Chris Burton leading.

However, the spotlight was firmly on Eric Winter’s first time as the cross country course designer. His course walked and rode strongly, with the cream rising to the top and Ingrid Klimke, Michael Jung and Andrew Nicholson in the lead.

If Saturday was exciting, Sunday was pure theatre. Nicholson got through with a gutsy clear round, but neither Klimke nor Jung could leave all the poles standing. So, at the age of 55, Andrew Nicolson finally won the title he richly deserved after completing his 37th Badminton!
